What is the course about?

During this two year course students will be learning about how to care for babies and children. Students will start to develop practical skills and qualities that are needed to meet the needs of children aged 0-3 years and 3-5 years.

During the course you will complete units on:

  • Physical and Emotional Care Needs of Children
  • Keeping Children Safe
  • Encouraging Children to Eat Healthy
  • Looking at Books, Stories, Poems and Rhymes for Children

How will I be assessed?

You need to complete assignments from each unit. This could be by producing a poster or a leaflet, giving a presentation or showing the skills you have learnt.

Your assignments will then be marked by your teacher. You will need to achieve a minimum of 13 credits to achieve a Pass.

What skills are required?

When working with children you will need to have a variety of skills and specific qualities. During the course you will need to demonstrate the following skills and qualities through a series of tasks:


  • Practical skills
  • ICT skills
  • Communication skills
  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Decision making


  • An interest in caring for children
  • A warm, caring and patient nature

Additional Information

During the course you will visit our on-site First Steps Nursery to interact with the children.

There will also be the opportunity to take part in an exciting and realistic experience involving the care of a virtual baby over a weekend.

You will take part in a babysitting course and basic first aid.
